SESSION 1 of 4: CHILD-CENTERED PLAY THERAPY ESSENTIALS: AN INTRODUCTORY COURSE
Course Description:
This course offers a comprehensive introduction to the field of child-centered play therapy, an evidence-based practice for working with children. Through a combination of lectures, PowerPoint presentations, videos, and experiential activities, students will gain knowledge and develop competencies for utilizing child-centered play therapy as a therapeutic intervention for children and families. The course focuses on the philosophical foundations of child-centered play therapy, including the history of this approach, child-centered theoretical frameworks, various theoretical applications, and best practices as guided by the Association for Play Therapy. Participants will become proficient in child-centered play therapy micro-skills, understand the purpose and goals of this approach, explore therapeutic stages and themes, address ethical considerations, examine multicultural implications, and delve into developmental and neurological aspects. Additionally, the course will focus on treatment planning in child-centered play therapy, including setting treatment goals and assessing progress, with applications across different populations and therapeutic contexts.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this 3-hour session, participants should be able to:
1. Compare and contrast essential individuals, theorists, and organizations that have significantly influenced the development of child-centered play therapy as a profession.
2. Identify developmentally and theoretically appropriate child-centered play therapy toys and materials for both assessment and treatment, considering multicultural perspectives.
3. Conceptualize a client's mental health issues and psychosocial problems through a child-centered play therapy framework.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the role of the child-centered play therapist within the broader clinical and non-clinical systems of the client.
5. Identify and conceptualize “the self” being a child-centered play therapist.
